WhatsApp photos not downloading? Fix media issues properly

When WhatsApp media will not download, the problem is usually storage, permissions, network restrictions, or a stuck cache not the chat itself.

WhatsApp text messages can work perfectly while photos and videos refuse to download. That makes the issue confusing, but media downloads need more than a simple connection. They need storage space, permission to save files, the right date and time, and a network that is not blocking background data.

Check storage before anything else

Photos and videos need space. If your phone is nearly full, WhatsApp may fail to download media even while messages still arrive. Check phone storage and clear old downloads, large videos, duplicate screenshots, or app cache. Then close WhatsApp and reopen it.

Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data

If media downloads on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, your router or network may be blocking or slowing the connection. If it works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data, check whether WhatsApp is allowed to use cellular data. Also make sure Data Saver or Low Data Mode is not stopping media downloads.

Check WhatsApp media auto-download settings

Open WhatsApp Settings, then Storage and Data. Check the media auto-download options for photos, audio, videos, and documents. You may have downloads disabled on mobile data or roaming. This does not always block manual downloads, but it can make media feel broken.

Give WhatsApp storage permission

On Android, open Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, and allow Photos and videos or Files and media depending on your phone. On iPhone, go to Settings, WhatsApp, Photos, and allow access. Without permission, WhatsApp may receive the message but fail to save or display the media properly.

Fix date and time settings

Wrong date and time can interfere with secure connections. Set date and time to automatic in your phone settings. This is a small check, but it solves weird app connection problems more often than expected.

Clear cache on Android

On Android, open Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, then Clear cache. Do not tap Clear data unless you know your chats are backed up. Clearing cache removes temporary files, not your chat history. iPhone does not offer the same direct cache button, so restarting the phone and updating the app is usually the cleaner route.

Quick warning: Before reinstalling WhatsApp, confirm your chat backup is current. Reinstalling without a backup can cost you messages and media history.

One extra check I would make

Most WhatsApp media problems come down to one of three things: no space, no permission, or a network setting quietly blocking downloads.

Quick answers

Why are WhatsApp photos not downloading?

Common causes include low storage, blocked permissions, weak network, wrong date and time, or disabled media download settings.

Will clearing WhatsApp cache delete chats?

On Android, clearing cache should not delete chats. Avoid Clear data unless your backup is confirmed.

Why do messages arrive but videos will not download?

Text needs very little data, while videos require storage, a stable connection, and permission to save media.
