Keyboard typing wrong letters? Fix layout and stuck key issues
If your keyboard suddenly types the wrong characters, it is usually a layout switch, Num Lock behavior, stuck key, or accessibility shortcut not a broken keyboard.
Typing one key and seeing another character is frustrating because it makes the whole computer feel unreliable. The good news is that most keyboard character problems are caused by settings, not hardware. Check layout, lock keys, and accessibility options before replacing anything.
Check the keyboard language layout
On Windows, look near the clock for the language indicator such as ENG. Make sure the layout is the one you normally use. Accidentally switching from US to UK layout can move symbols like @, quotation marks, and pound signs. On Mac, check Keyboard settings and Input Sources.
Turn Num Lock on or off
Some laptops use part of the keyboard as a number pad when Num Lock is active. If letters are turning into numbers, Num Lock is the first thing to check. You may need to hold Fn and press the Num Lock key depending on the laptop.
Look for a stuck modifier key
A stuck Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Option, or Fn key can make normal typing behave strangely. Press each modifier key a few times. If one feels physically stuck or soft, gently clean around it with the laptop powered off.
Disable Sticky Keys or Filter Keys
Accessibility shortcuts can change how the keyboard responds. On Windows, search for Sticky Keys and Filter Keys in Settings and turn them off if you do not use them. These features are helpful for some users, but accidental activation can make typing feel broken.
Test with an external keyboard
Plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard if you have one. If the external keyboard works normally, the laptop keyboard may have a physical issue. If both keyboards type wrong characters, the problem is almost certainly a language, layout, or software setting.
Restart before changing drivers
A keyboard layout or shortcut can get stuck after sleep mode or remote desktop sessions. Restart the computer before reinstalling drivers. If the issue continues, check for keyboard driver updates through the manufacturer or system update tools.
One extra check I would make
The fastest clue is whether symbols are wrong or letters are wrong. Wrong symbols usually mean layout. Wrong letters in one area can mean Num Lock or hardware.
Quick answers
Why is my keyboard typing the wrong characters?
Common causes include the wrong language layout, Num Lock, stuck keys, Sticky Keys, or keyboard hardware damage.
Why are my laptop letters typing numbers?
Num Lock may be turning part of the keyboard into a number pad.
Can changing keyboard language fix wrong symbols?
Yes. A different keyboard layout can move symbols even when the physical keys look the same.
