Google Drive not syncing? Fix files stuck on waiting or uploading
Drive sync problems usually come from paused syncing, full storage, file name issues, account confusion, or a desktop app that needs a restart.
Google Drive can look simple until a file refuses to upload. You may see “waiting to sync,” “uploading,” or a cloud icon that never finishes. Before deleting files or reinstalling the app, check the common causes in order.
Check if sync is paused
Click the Google Drive icon near the clock on Windows or the menu bar on Mac. Look for a paused sync message. If syncing is paused, resume it and give Drive a few minutes. This is the easiest fix and also the easiest one to overlook.
Make sure storage is not full
Drive will not sync properly if your Google account storage is full. Open Drive in a browser and check storage. Gmail, Google Photos, and Drive all share the same account storage in many setups, so a full mailbox or photo backup can block file syncing too.
Confirm the right account is signed in
Many people have personal, work, school, and client Google accounts. The desktop app may be signed into one account while the browser is showing another. Check the profile picture in Drive and make sure you are looking at the same account in both places.
Look for problem file names
Very long file names, unusual symbols, temporary files, or files still open in another app can get stuck. Rename the file with a simple name and try moving it to a normal folder. Avoid characters that other systems may not like, especially if you share files between Windows and Mac.
Restart the Drive desktop app
Quit Google Drive from the system tray or menu bar, then open it again. If that does not help, restart the computer. Sync apps run background processes, and a simple restart often clears a stuck queue.
Test upload in the browser
Drag the same file directly into Google Drive in your browser. If browser upload works, the file is fine and the desktop app is the issue. If browser upload also fails, check internet, storage, account permission, or file size.
One extra check I would make
When Drive is stuck, I always check three things first: paused sync, full storage, and the wrong Google account. Those three explain a lot of “missing” files.
Quick answers
Why is Google Drive stuck syncing?
Sync may be paused, storage may be full, the desktop app may be stuck, or one file may have a name or permission problem.
Does Google Drive storage include Gmail?
For many accounts, Gmail, Google Photos, and Drive share the same Google storage pool.
Why do files show on my computer but not in Drive online?
The desktop app may not have uploaded them yet, may be signed into a different account, or may be paused.
